Art
Mrs. Haines

The new school year is off to a very creative start in art class!  Our talented Viking Artists have been working hard to create masterpieces for our Art Hallway of Fame, Cafe’ Gallery, The Humane Society’s Art Contest, and a monthly display at BJ’s Wholesale Club, as well as thinking about an art project for our PTA’s upcoming “Beauty is…,” Reflections Contest.  Great effort is made to exhibit each student’s work at least once during the school year at JBE, or at one of our many art shows throughout our community.  Show dates and locations will be announced in Jenguard.  A BIG thank you goes out to Dr. Frank Spera for volunteering another year of his time and efforts as our wonderful third grade Picture Person!  Art class can be messy, and we will be working in a variety of mediums that may not always wash out; therefore, students should be mindful about wearing new clothing on art days.  I look forward to another great year of art with you!

Music
Mrs. Jekanowski

Happy Fall to everyone! Music classes are off to a great start with lots of learning and fun at all grade levels.  The fourth and fifth grade classes have been learning the Armed Forces’ songs.  They have been learning and reviewing basic musical symbols as well as some treble clef note names while having fun playing musical “rug” games.  All of this will get them ready to begin the popular instrumental program, Recorder Karate.  The flyer that came  home with your fourth and fifth grade students should have explained all  the details but if you have any questions, please call me here at school #219-1555, ext. 230, or send a note in with your child.  I will respond as soon as possible. Fifth graders will enjoy the challenge of new belt songs and another exciting supplemental program, Recorder Classroom which has an online component that students can access at homeJ  Third graders have begun to learn many new musical symbols, applying their growing understanding  of these symbols in the music we sing in our Music Express  bi-monthly music resource.  They also enjoy musical games, developing their musical literacy and have done a wonderful job playing the American folksong “Tideo” on a variety of pitched and unpitched instruments.  Second grade continues to study The Carnival of The Animals, a masterwork written by French composer Camille St. Seans.  They continue to develop basic mallet technique while playing simple rhythmic parts on pitched and unpitched instruments.  They did a beautiful job singing and playing their first piece “Leo the Lion”.  Kindergarten and First grade music students spend the beginning of each music class singing and moving to the beat with games and listening activities.  They enjoy singing a variety of letter songs with gestures and American Sign Language.  “The Sound House” is a very popular instrument guessing game where they take turns playing and then guessing the identity of basic percussion instruments.  Basically, music classes are just plain FUN!

After school chorus meets every Thursday students are in school until the end of the school year from 2:00-3:00PM. The program is free this year and we are quite a large, joyous group of third, fourth and fifth grade students.  I want to express my thanks to the parents who have already assisted with Thursday rehearsals and dismissal.  If you are interested in helping on any Thursday, please leave a message at school or send a note in with your chorus student with a phone number and the best time you can be reached.

Mr. Weber has begun working with beginning and advanced band students every Tuesday afternoon.  I can hear the progress and fun from my office as I finish up my afternoon paperwork!

Hope you enjoy October as much as we all will in music here at JBEJ

Science Lab

Ms. Ankrom

Welcome to a year full of scientific discovery and exploration!  My philosophy is that children learn science concepts best by doing science.  Doing science means hands-on experiences with objects, organisms, and systems.  Hands-on activities are motivating for students, and they stimulate inquiry and curiosity.  When involved in learning something of interest, students come to understand concepts more fully, remember them long after the experience, and develop confidence in their ability to find things out and to understand science.
With this philosophy in mind, the students are off to a wonderful start as they conduct various investigations in the Science Lab.  All grade levels, from Kindergarten through Fifth, will be participating in fun and exciting hands-on experiments.  I look forward to a fantastic year of teaching and making discoveries with all of JBE’s young scientists.
