S.T.A.R. Standardized Test for Assessment of Reading
The Standardized Test for Assessment of Reading (S.T.A.R.) servers two primary purposes. It provides teachers with quick and accurate estimates of students' instructional reading levels. Second, it offers sound estimates of students' reading levels relative to national norms. While S.T.A.R. provides accurate normed data like traditional norm-referenced tests, it is not intended to be used as a "high-stakes" test (Ex. CAT or FCAT) whose main function is to report end-of-period performance to parents and administration or to determine eligibility for promotion or placement. Instead, S.T.A.R. makes it easier to fine-tune instruction sooner while there is still time to improve performance before the yearly testing time. Teachers at JBE use the S.T.A.R. Program along with Accelerated Reader Program to help place students in appropriate reading zones so that students can improve their reading comprehension. For more information about S.T.A.R. please contact your child's teacher and/or the media specialist.
